it was no surprise when John Tavares was named the 14th captain in franchise history Monday during a press conference at Bethpage State Park.

"It's pretty special," said Tavares, who replaces Mark Streit as captain after the veteran defenseman was traded to the Flyers in June.

Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff announced his retirement on Monday after 12 NHL seasons, according to an ESPN.com report.

The 36-year-old Kiprusoff, who began his career with the Sharks, joined the Flames in 2003 and spent nine seasons with Calgary.

Kiprusoff says he made the decision to retire at the end of last season, but thought about it over the summer before making an announcement that he was "100 percent sure."

The Canucks will retire Pavel Bure's No. 10 when Vancouver hosts the Maple Leafs on Nov. 2 at Rogers Arena, according to an ESPN.com report.

The team announced Friday it will retire its fourth number in franchise history.
